Summer Bible Study - Post 1

Welcome to my informal summer Bible study. We're going to be doing the New Testament Basics course available through RCB for free. You'll need to register and start the class here.

This blog is meant to facilitate discussion between the many people joining us for this study. So, after you've viewed the video lecture (Lesson 1.2) and read Matthew 1 - 9 (the reading assignment), please answer the following questions:

1) Who are you? We need to get to know each other a little.
2) What is the most intersting fact you learned from the video lecture? Why?
3) What is the most powerful passage of scripture you read in Matthew 1-9? Why?

Check back often to continue the conversation!

I'm Cassie--the owner of this blog. I'm married, have a 7 mo old son, and work my day job as a staff attorney to a trial court judge.

I'm only partially through the homework, but I just thought that the summary of Jewish history and Jesus birth (through the Maccabean period) was particularly enlightening. I knew quite a bit about the Hellenistic period, from Beth Moore's "Daniel" series, but the 200 years right before Jesus' birth were pretty much blank for me.

My favorite verse so far is Matthew 3:8: "Prove by te way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God." (NLT) John the Baptist wasn't subtle, was he? This is a verse to any Christian, with broader applications than just the "Pharisees" among us. It is a powerful, and convicting, challenge.

ARE YOU PROVING BY THE WAY YOU LIVE THAT YOU HAVE REPENTED OF YOUR SINS AND TURNED TO GOD?

I'm Diana, a wife, career woman, and mom of 3: two adult children and my baby, a soon-to-be graduating high school senior. My goals for this study are to stay in the Word so I don't slip back into the old me. I want my relationship with HIM to grow and not to get so busy with my schedule that I forget HE is priority. Also, the more I study and stay grounded I hope will translate into being more comfortable sharing my faith and bragging on God.

I liked learning about the reasons the books of the Bible are in the particular order we have them today. The Jewish history made me think about God's timeline and our world history. I wonder where we are now; are we in the end times?

Overall, I took note of Matthew's frequent references to OT prophecy fulfilled with the coming of our Lord. Was Matthew’s factual testimony and frequent references to OT prophecy fulfilled convincing to God’s chosen people? Did his writing convert many?

Also, I read Matt 4:17 with fresh eyes. From that time on (after John was in prison and Jesus was tempted) He preached, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is near”. I noticed those were John the Baptist’s words in Matt 3:2. Jesus began preaching the same message of repentance after John’s ministry was interrupted!
